2011 in review

Note from Lee: This post was automatically generated for me by Yeah, I didn’t get a lot of visitors, and most of my comments were spam…

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,200 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Domain name?

I’ve been thinking lately that I might move to some kind of paid hosting with a domain name. I really just can’t think of a domain name, or whether I should just stick to blogging here on

So, I’m going to add a poll to see whether I should stay here or move to paid hosting (I’m thinking HostGator because they have pretty cheap plans).

Also, getting to the title of this article, what would be a good domain name? I was thinking about having something with my name but nothing really good is available. I also thought about just getting, but nobody would remember that. Please leave your suggestions in the comments below.

Did you know I have a chatroom?

If you’ve ever wanted to chat live with other geeks/nerds (and me!) then why not try going to my chatroom? It’s IRC based but has a flash client here on this site. So far, not many people have visited my chatroom but I’m looking to change that. Just click the Chatroom link in the top navigation bar. Any topics will be allowed, tech or non-tech, but be sure to read the rules and guidelines first ;).

I connect to the channel automatically any time my IRC client is opened, so I should be there most of the time.

What links will stay in a comment

For a while, I’ve been removing links in comments. To clear up any possible suspicion, I do NOT remove all links from comments. I will only remove links in the actual comment if they are not relevant to the post or link to a site rated poorly. I use something similar for links in the comment headers. You may link to your personal website in the comment headers, however if that website is rated poorly on WOT then I will most likely remove it. If there is a reference to this site’s title in either the name or email fields, I will remove those as well.

The reason for writing this post is just in case anyone thinks I have removed a link to prevent other blogs to be popularized. If you would like to have your blog or website featured here, just contact me and I’ll check it out.

Writing a Guest Blog Post

If you look at the top of the page (at the navigation bar) you will notice a new page titled “Submit a Blog Post.” I have created this page to allow users to submit guest blog posts. If you have a good idea for a post and want to write it yourself, use the form on the “Submit a Blog Post” page. It will email me the contents of your post. Try to keep the following points/guidelines in mind while writing:

  • The post has to be professional. If you use too many acronyms or “chat speak,” your post will not be accepted.
  • Try to use proper spelling, capitalization, punctuation,  and grammar. I will fix any obvious mistakes I find, however if the post contains too many errors, I will throw it out.
  • Use a title appropriate to the post. For example, if your post is about keyboards, don’t have a title about monitors.
  • Keep the post relevant to my website. I wont be too strict on the topic, but if it is completely unrelated to technology, it probably wont be accepted.
  • The form will be submitted as plain text. This means that, in order for something be be in bold or underlined, you must use HTML. An example is on the “Submit a Blog Post” page.
  • Images must be uploaded on an image hosting website. I will not upload images for you.
  • Don’t use huge images. Some readers might have slower connections. Large images also cause the layout of the page to change, which isn’t ideal. If you use large images, I may replace them with either thumbnails or links.

If I decide to accept your blog post, I will give you credit at the top of the post with a link to your website (or other online presence).

Website Optimization

I have been noticing my website taking a very long time to load lately. I’m not sure if this is just my problem, or if it happens to everyone, but I am going to be trying to make my website a little quicker. I will be installing some plugins to monitor memory usage etc so hopefully I can get it to load quicker. If it loads fine for you, leave a comment. If it is a little slow for you, I’d recommend subscribing to my RSS feed (there is a link at the top and also there should be one in the address bar of your browser) in an RSS reader, like Google Reader, so you can still get my posts but don’t have to load my entire website every time.

Thinking about a Q&A site

A while ago, I deleted my forum because it wasn’t getting any activity. I recently received an email asking a question (which is perfectly fine) so I started thinking that I should have a place for people to ask questions, in case there is something I cannot answer. I looked around for some Question and Answer software for my site but can’t really find any. There is one that’s free and open source, but I have no idea how to install it (since I don’t own the server and really don’t know much about my server either). The one I’m looking at is OSQA (the one I don’t really know how to install). If anyone knows of any others that are easier to install or know of how I can install it, let me know (either by commenting or using the Contact Me page.
I will still by attempting to install OSQA but I’m not sure if it will be successful or not.

I have found another piece of software that is very similar to OSQA called Question2Answer. It’s currently installed and working. I make a question asking what everyone thinks of the Q&A site, so go check it out and answer my question 🙂
The link to the Q&A site is:
