Are you triplatformal?

I use Windows as my main operating system, and that probably isn’t going to change. I have however recently purchased a used Macbook Pro. I haven’t used it much (I’m waiting until I ‘m not so busy) so I don’t have any first impressions yet. I now have all three major operating systems. I have Windows 7 on my desktop with a dual boot (via Wubi) of Ubuntu 11.04. On my laptop (a Windows laptop), I have Windows XP with Ubuntu 10.04 via Wubi as well (will probably upgrade to 11.04 sometime). Then I have the MacBook with Snow Leopard 10.6.7.

I will post a First Impressions when I start using Mac OS X some more.

Does anyone else have all three (or at least two) of the major operating systems?

Would you spend 1,200 bucks on a tablet?

According to Engadget, the Motorola Xoom will be available to preorder at Best Buy on Thursday, Feb. 17. The only catch is that it will apparently be $1,199! The article on Engadget says that it may be a placeholder number but there will be a mandatory 1 month activation requirement with Verizon. The updated post states that the price will instead be $800, which is quite a bit cheaper. However, I find this price to be pretty high as well. For $800 you could buy a pretty decent laptop, or an even better desktop. Considering that the iPad starts at $500, they are going to have a hard time selling the Xoom over the iPad unless they lower the price a little.

Skype giving credit for recent outages

Snap_2010.12.29 13.24.49_001

Skype is sending out emails apologizing for the recent outages. In those emails, they are giving away a free $1 credit as a voucher. I don’t use Skype for calling phones (actually, I don’t use it much at all) but the $1 free credit is nice, especially for those who use Skype regularly to keep in touch with distant family/friends. The email states that the credit is worth a call over 30 minutes. Did you receive an email? Did you redeem the credit? Leave a comment below.

Keyboard Test

I recently stumbled on a neat trick with your keyboard. Basically, hold both shift keys and type.
It’s a fun test to type either the Alphabet or “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

Here’s my results both ways:
ACFHIJKMNPQRSTUVWXYZ
A QUICK RWN FX JUMPS VR TH AZY

Notice how in the second one, I can’t type “DOG”

Try it for yourself! Post a comment with your results.

HTC Aria on AT&T

A new android device has finally been released on AT&T. The first Android device, the Motorola Backflilp, was loaded with bloatware and had an older version of Android. The Aria has Android 2.1 (with the HTC Sense UI on top) and doesn’t have nearly as much bloatware as the backflip. Yes, there are AT&T specific apps but that should be expected. AT&T has also blocked the ability to download non-market applications from being installed, but that can be explained (even though it is an inconvenience).

Here are the specs copied from HTC’s website:

Also, the Samsung Captivate was announced, which will have a bigger screen and much better specs.

Formspring

If you are following me on Twitter, I’ve tweeted out the following:

I’m having fun with #formspringme. Create an account and follow me at http://formspring.me/lhamil64

I decided that once I get at least 10 questions, I’ll make a blog post with them. The only problem is that I need questions. If you’re reading this, please go to http://formspring.me/lhamil64 and ask me something. If it’s not appropriate or not a question, I’m going to delete it. If you don’t want to use Formspring, you can comment on this post with a question. I’ll post it anonymously on my Formspring profile and answer it there. Hopefully I actually get questions so I can post them. I am also going to do regular blog posts with questions and answers (assuming I keep getting them..) and possibly videos if I can find the time.

Tinkernut/gigafide was hacked

If you go to Gigafide’s youtube channel, you will notice that there are no videos and the info is from a hacker. Tinkernut’s (aka gigafide) youtube channel has been hacked and the hacker is now threatening to hack mobilephone2003 (http://duncsweb.com). Lets hope this hacker (who apparently is some young kid) is just trying to scare everyone and that Tinkernut had all his video’s backed up.
